Winter Hair Myths You Probably Still Believe (And What to Do Instead)
Share
Winter’s here, and that means cozy sweaters, hot drinks… and some seriously confusing hair advice floating around the internet. On this episode of The Beauty Lab Podcast, Monina and Velia are busting the biggest winter hair myths so you can keep your locks healthy, shiny, and strong all season long.
Let’s dive into what’s true, what’s totally false, and what you should be doing instead.
Myth #1: Wearing a Hat Causes Hair Loss
False! 🙅♀️
Unless your hat is super tight, filthy, and trapping sweat, it won’t cause hair loss. What can happen is breakage — friction from certain fabrics (like wool or synthetics) can cause split ends and flyaways.
Velia’s pro tip:
- Wash your hair and your hat regularly.
- Choose softer fabrics that won’t rub your strands raw.
- If you’re sweating a lot under your hat, wash your hair to keep your scalp healthy.
Myth #2: You Don’t Need UV Protection for Hair in Winter
❌ Also false!
The sun’s UV rays are around all year, even on cloudy days. In fact, snow reflects up to 90% of UV rays, meaning your hair and skin are still exposed when you’re skiing, walking, or just running errands.
Why it matters: UV damage breaks down proteins in your hair, making it dry, fragile, and dull.
Velia’s solution: Use a leave-in with UV protection like Velia Beauty Co.’s Act Natural Leave-In Conditioner. It helps protect your color, lock in moisture, and keep your hair looking soft and shiny — even in the snow.
Myth #3: Rinsing with Cold Water Makes Hair Shinier
➡️ Only kinda true.
Cold water does help close the hair cuticle temporarily, but once your hair warms back up, it reopens.
So instead of freezing in the shower:
- Wash your hair with lukewarm water (especially if it’s color-treated).
-
Finish with a shine serum like Liquid Amethyst from Velia Beauty Co. — it seals the cuticle, locks in moisture, and adds shine that actually lasts.

Myth #4: Cold Air Doesn’t Affect Your Hair
🛑 Sorry, but that’s another myth.
Cold air has very little humidity, which means it’s constantly pulling moisture from your hair and skin. That’s why winter dryness hits so hard.
Keep your hair hydrated by:
- Using a leave-in conditioner (hello, Act Natural again).
- Doing a weekly deep conditioning mask like Damage Control to restore protein and moisture.
- Drinking plenty of water (coffee doesn’t count 😉).
Bonus Myth: You Can Skip Wash Days in Winter
This one’s a “maybe.” You might be able to go an extra day between washes, but don’t push it too far. The best test? Rub your fingertips on your scalp. If you feel residue or oil, it’s wash time.
And yes — asking your partner to do the sniff test is optional but apparently effective 😂
The bottom line?
Your hair still needs love in winter — just a little differently. Focus on moisture, gentle care, and UV protection, and your hair will thank you come spring.
