As a licensed cosmetologist with over 20 years of experience in the beauty industry, I’ve learned that understanding your hair type is the key to choosing the right products and achieving healthier, more beautiful hair.
If you’ve ever felt frustrated by products that don’t seem to work or contribute to the “product graveyard” under your sink, this guide is for you. Let’s dive into the three key components of your hair type: wave pattern, density, and texture.
Discover how to identify your hair type by understanding wave pattern, density, and texture. Learn how Velia Beauty Co.’s products are designed to work for your unique hair needs.
Wave Pattern Your wave pattern determines whether your hair is:
Straight
Wavy
Curly
Coily (tight curls)
Did you know your wave pattern can change over time? Hormones, like those during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause, can affect how your hair behaves. For example, I had straight hair growing up, but after puberty, my hair became curly—a story many of my clients can relate to!
Density refers to how much hair you have on your scalp:
Thin: Fewer hairs per square inch
Medium: An average amount of hair
Thick: A full, dense head of hair
Texture describes the diameter of each strand of hair:
Fine: Fragile and delicate strands
Medium: Average strength strands
Coarse: Thick and strong strands
Each texture has its own strengths and challenges. For example, fine hair is more prone to breakage, while coarse hair can be harder to style but is incredibly resilient.
Knowing your hair type helps you select products that actually work for you. For instance:
