Fall Hair Trends 2026: Boyfriend Bobs, Bixie Cuts, New Bangs, and Warm Color

Fall Hair Trends 2026: Boyfriend Bobs, Bixie Cuts, New Bangs, and Warm Color

Trends creep in, stick around for a while, and then evolve out, and 2026 is no exception. On The Beauty Lab Podcast, Monina asked hairstylist Velia what clients are really asking for right now. The short version: messier, softer, warmer, and a lot less heat styling. Here is what is trending in haircuts, bangs, and color this fall, plus easy ways to try it without a big commitment.

What Is the Boyfriend Bob?

Bobs are moving away from the sleek, super styled, flat-ironed A-line look and toward something more organic, with a less straight perimeter and a more shattered finish. One version has a name you have probably seen: the boyfriend bob. Velia compares it to the haircut version of wearing your boyfriend's worn-in sweatshirt, a cozy vibe more than a strict shape.

It is usually chin length, with a shattered perimeter, which means it is not a blunt line and has texture built in. Ironically, even with that cozy name, it takes more styling than other bobs. You create waves with a flat iron or curling iron and then break them up so they look like you did not do a thing. Other cuts this season are closer to a true air-dry.

What Is a Bixie Haircut, and Who Can Wear It?

A bixie is a combination of a bob and a pixie. The perimeter is the structured, more blunt part of a bob, while the layers are very short, shattered, and fun, like a pixie. It is cute, and a lot of people can pull it off.

Bixies tend to sit around jaw length, and the longer versions need the right hair thickness to look right. Face shape matters too. Velia's rule of thumb: if you feel you have the face shape for a jaw-length bob, you can probably wear a bixie. If you are not sure, check out our episode on face shapes.

Is the Wolf Cut Going Out of Style? What Long Hair Looks Like Now

Long hair is staying shattered and layered, but we are moving away from the wolf cut. Velia was never a fan of the very heavy bangs, heavy disconnected layers, and long, stringy, wispy ends. If you love it, it is your vibe, but the trend is shifting away from extreme short-to-long contrast.

What is taking its place is a more traditional, blended kind of layering that still looks organic and a little messy. Even when the layers are shorter on a longer cut, everything is blended together.

What Bangs Are Trending in 2026?

Bangs are always going to be in, but we are finally moving away from curtain bangs. They look great, but they are hard to style and deal with. The newer evolution is not just a curtain: there are wispy bangs on the forehead with some thickness through the sides, and it is often called the Ella Langley bang. It used to be Sabrina Carpenter, and now clients ask for Ella.

A fun fact Velia shared: Ella Langley has said on social media that she keeps her bangs in place during concerts with eyelash glue on her forehead. Please do not do this every day. It is a concert-only move, not a daily routine.

What Hair Colors Are Trending for Fall 2026?

Fall is a popular time for color refreshes, and many people go a little darker. Velia does not push clients to go darker, but she sees it every year. This season, everything is about cozy, warm, feel-good color.

Blondes: fewer ashy tones and more golden. If you are a bright or cool blonde, think honey and maple, or a few lowlights to break up a solid platinum. Brunettes tend to go one of two ways: caramel highlights or a rich, deep chocolate. Reds have been muted for a few years, but with a pop of color, and the words you will hear are cinnamon, cherry cola, bronze, and amber. Coppers usually stay copper, while true reds and maroons lean toward cherry cola.

Why Is Effortless Hair So Popular This Fall?

There are a couple of reasons. After a summer of heat styling and sun, many people take the fall to repair their hair and use less heat. It is also the cozy, lazy season: messy buns, scarves, hoodies, and a coffee run in oversized sweatshirts. The vibe is rolled-out-of-bed chic.

A quick note from Velia: the messiest looks are not always effortless. Some, like the boyfriend bob, take real styling to look like you did nothing, and others are simply left to air dry.

How Can You Update Your Look Without a Big Commitment?

You do not need a full overhaul. If you wear extensions, consider going a little shorter or taking a break this fall. A slightly shorter cut does not have to be a big chop, and a subtle bang is another easy option. Skip curtain bangs if you want subtle, because they are high maintenance.

For color, blondes can add a few caramel or honey pieces or go a bit darker on their toner. Brunettes can try a couple of caramel highlights around the face, or a dark chocolate tone just around the face. For styling, try a bigger curling iron with fewer curls, wear it a little messy, or let your hair air dry and see what happens. The worst case is you do not like it and go back to your curling iron.

Why Should You Ask Your Stylist Before Trying a Trend?

Trends creep in and creep out, and you do not want to be stuck with one that was never right for you. Your stylist knows your personality and your skill level for styling a new cut. A cut can look great walking out of the salon, but can you recreate it at home? Many women say it does not look the same at home, and your stylist can tell you what styling to expect and whether you will need to learn something new.

Also, messy hair can feel uncomfortable if you are used to a styled look. Velia compares it to red lipstick: some people feel amazing in it and others feel like everyone is staring. If it looks good but feels unfamiliar, try owning it for the day. Then tell us which 2026 trends you are loving!
